Eby, 46, will be sworn in as Lt. Governor. Janet Austin at the Musqueam Community Center instead of the traditional venue of Government House in Victoria. As prime minister-designate Abe said he planned to hit the ground running to pass legislation, despite only four days remaining in the legislative session after taking office. He previously cited housing, health care and public safety as his top priorities. Eby replaces outgoing Prime Minister John Horgan, who is stepping down as Prime Minister due to health concerns following last year’s treatment for throat cancer. CBC is broadcasting the swearing-in ceremony live. Abby was born and raised in Kitchener, Ont., and moved to BC. in the early 2000s after completing an undergraduate degree in ‘rhetoric and professional writing’ at the University of Waterloo and a law degree at Dalhousie University. He was a lawyer with Pivot Legal Society in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside from 2005 to 2008. During this time, he advocated for the rights of the city’s homeless. He later became executive director of the BC Civil Liberties Association. Eby’s political career began with an unsuccessful run in the 2008 Vancouver municipal election. As the BC NDP candidate for Vancouver-Point Gray in the 2011 provincial election, he lost to then-premier Christy Clark. In a 2013 rematch, Eby defeated Clark and has held the riding of Vancouver-Point Gray ever since. He was appointed BC attorney general in 2017 and housing minister in 2020, stepping down from both positions when he announced his bid to become leader of the BC NDP in July.
