Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is calling on Canada to help with a long-term peace plan with Russia. The Ukrainian leader made the request in a pre-recorded video speech at an international security conference in Halifax. Zelensky, whose country Russia invaded in February, said real peace would require agreement on 10 different areas. These include the withdrawal of Russian forces, the release of prisoners and ensuring Ukraine’s nuclear, food and energy security. Zelensky told participants at the Halifax International Security Forum, including Defense Minister Anita Anand, that he expects Canada to lead the effort in one of the areas. Anand, in her own speech, cited the more than $1 billion in military aid Canada has provided to Ukraine since the war began.
