Five people were killed Saturday night at a gay nightclub in Colorado Springs, Colorado, police said. Another 18 people were injured in the mass shooting at Club Q.
Authorities received “multiple” 911 calls starting at 11:57 p.m. and responded to the scene, Colorado Springs police Lt. Pamela Castro said.
“They located a person we believe to be the suspect inside,” Castro said. “At this time, the suspect is being treated but remains in custody.”
Castro did not say whether the suspect was among the number of people injured in the shooting.
Police declined to talk about a possible motive. Colorado Springs Fire Chief Mike Smaldino said 11 ambulances responded to the scene after multiple 911 calls.
“We’re going to be here for many, many hours into the future,” Castro said, adding that the FBI is on the scene assisting.
In a statement on social media, Club Q said it was “devastated by the senseless attack on our community” and offered its condolences to the victims and their families.
“We appreciate the quick reactions of the heroic customers who subdued the gunman and ended this hateful attack,” the statement said. Details of how the shooting ended have not yet been released by police, but Castro said it was “not a police-involved shooting.”
This is a developing story and will be updated.
