One person was killed and at least 19 were injured when a car plowed into an Apple store in Hingham, Massachusetts, the Plymouth County Prosecutor’s Office said Monday.
Police identified Kevin Bradley, 65, of New Jersey, as the man who died at the scene, according to a news release from the district attorney’s office. The driver has not been identified at this time, the DA’s office said.
Around 10:45 am several 911 calls came in for help at the Derby Street stores, said District Attorney Tim Cruz. Hingham police and fire personnel responded soon after to find several injured people at the Apple store, Cruz added.
“A dark colored SUV appears, drove at an undetermined rate of speed, through a … glass window and struck multiple people,” Cruz said.
Responding units found “multiple patients injured in front of the store and in the store, including some patients pinned to the wall by the vehicle,” Hingham Fire Chief Steve Murhpy said during a press conference Monday.
Seven fire engines and 14 ambulances were on the scene to treat the injured victims, Murphy said. The chief was unable to provide updates on the condition of the victims. Authorities are not releasing the names of the injured victims at this time as they work to notify family members, Cruz added.
South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, Mass., treated 17 patients from the crash as of Monday night, the DA’s office told CNN in an email. Two other injured people initially taken to South Shore were taken to Boston hospitals.
Injuries included people with head trauma and broken limbs, said Dr. William Tollefsen, who works on the South Shore and was at the scene after the crash to help triage patients.
Tollefsen said he and other first responders used a nearby restaurant during the triage to keep people out of the cold.
South Shore trauma chief Dr. Christopher Burns, said they treat many patients with life-threatening and limb-threatening injuries. Some had undergone surgery and others were still waiting, Burns said Monday afternoon.
Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston admitted two patients who remain hospitalized, according to a hospital spokesman. Boston Medical Center admitted three patients who remain hospitalized, a hospital spokesman told CNN by phone.
It is unclear whether Brigham and Women’s and Boston Medical Center include patients transferred to them in their total.
Cruz said the crash investigation is “active” and ongoing.
“As far as the operator of the motor vehicle is concerned, we are looking into that. As far as the motor vehicle situation, we’re looking into that,” Cruz said. The driver of the vehicle has not been taken to the hospital, according to Cruz.
“I understand he hasn’t been taken to the hospital yet,” Cruz said. “He is, at the moment, with the police.”
When asked how many people were likely inside the Apple store when the crash happened, Cruz noted that it’s the start of a holiday week.
“Obviously the Apple store is a very busy place. It’s Monday of a vacation week,” Cruz said. “So I don’t know exactly how many were in there – I’m sure we’ll find out.”
Hingham is about 20 miles south of Boston.
Apple’s location on Derby Street in Hingham is currently closed, according to its website.
“We apologize for the inconvenience while this store is closed,” the site said. “Until we can reopen, please consider using our online services.”
Apple released a statement Monday saying “our hearts go out to our team members and customers who were injured and to all those affected by this terrible incident.”
“We are devastated by the shocking events at Apple Derby Street today and the tragic loss of a professional who was on site to support the recent build at the store,” the company’s statement said. “We are doing everything we can to support our team members and customers during this very difficult time.”
The Apple store, which has a large glass window, is located in the back corner of the luxury Derby Street shops. The store’s entrance faces a large parking lot through which hundreds of visitors pass daily.
The shopping area is especially busy during the holiday season, with the Apple store and surrounding restaurants and shops drawing large crowds at this time of year.
